Trying to find out the country and or style of this wooden carved oriental blanket chest?
img89.imageshack.us my.php?image geseldasestate26mf5.jpgI am the heir to an oriental style large heavy wood carved chest. The inside is cedar and has one long box like shelf that sits in the inside top. I'm not even sure what type of wood this is. I would love to find out the era and or maker of this chest. I did notice what was possibly some oriental markings on the bottom of the chest, but they were too faded for me to make out at all. Any help would be most appreciated. Any ANTIQUE DEALERS OUT THERE??????
How do I create a smooth 'patina' on an old pine blanket chest?
I have an old pine blanket chest that I found covered in dirt and grease. I was not concerned with it's possible $$ value it was filthy anyway so I scrubbed it with TSP cleaner, soap, putty knife, steel wool, etc. It is clean now. What I want to do is recreate that smooth kinda shiny patina raw old wood gets after years of handling. There has to be a way to do this without coating it with varathane and things like this. Can anyone help?

Is the use of one blanket chest for two male hamsters (at different times) cruel?
We have two male hamsters in separate cages and we let them run separately in a blanket chest that has sand and toys in it. When they get in, they sniff around and then seem to scent mark everywhere by rubbing their bodies on things. They seem active and interested and not stressed by the smell of the other. They run around the house in separate balls and take no notice of each other. So, my question is... is the use of the same blanket chest for two different hamsters causing them stress that I can't see and is it cruel?
I am trying to identify the era/culture of this large solid wood blanket chest that I am heir...?
...to.img89.imageshack.us my.php?image geseldasestate26mf5.jpgThe chest has ships, flowers and what looks like possibly oriental people carved throughout the entire chest. The inside is cedar and has a removable top shelf. The lock is metal Possibly brass and also have designs on it I cannot find any markings on the chest other than some sort of possible oriental symbols on the bottom. It's so faded out that I cannot really tell.Any information would be greatly appreciated.

It was a wedding present to my parents in 1965 and is original apart from the fabric on the lid which has been replaced. it has never been painted.
