Newborn sleeping with blanket in crib?

Question: Newborn sleeping with blanket in crib?

(Posted by: Alex's Mommy on 2010-03-09 20:45:18)

I only have around two weeks until I am due, so now all my last minute fears are sneaking up on me. I've been reading up on SIDs a lot. (My husband's little brother passed away from SIDs and this is something that really concerns him.) I know that teddy bears and pillows are dangerous, but what about blankets? I've read different things. Some say to cover the baby at night, some say not to. I feel really dumb asking this, but it does really concern me.

Sleep sacks!! They are a wearable blanket (with or without sleeves) you can get at babies r us. Definitely do not put lose blankets in the crib with a newborn though.

You can buy blanket sleepers. I did cover my daughter with a light blanket. But you don't want baby being too cold or too warm as that can contribute towards sids as well. I'll try and find a link on the baby blanket sleeper thingy... But I too was terrified of sids. Her first night home, I didn't sleep because I was so nervous about SIDS. The 2nd night I was a tad better but even now at 4 months I still wake up in the middle of the night to make sure she's still breathing and that she hasn't kicked off her blankets. eta - here it is, It's called a sleep sack not a blanket sleeper thingy lol. toysrus.ca/ product/ index.jsp?productId= 3706159 &cp= 2583002.2583002 &parentPage= family

Loose blankets are usually frowned upon, but swaddling is safe and can help baby sleep longer.

You are not supposed to put a lose blanket in the crib. If it is very cold you can swaddle the baby if you must. They make baby sleep sacks so you don't have to use a blanket if you live in a cold climate. Leaving a lmap or night light on and have circulating air also helps lowers the chance of sids.

Newborns dont roll, so you wrap them in the blanket in such a way that it leaves their head free and the end tags of the blanket held down by the babies own weight underneith the baby, that way it cant come undone and smother the baby. this also makes the baby feel like it is still in the womb. u also use no pillow, and place the babies feet at the bottom of the cot so they cannot slide down at all. the nurses in the hospital will demostrate the correct way to wrap the baby, just ask them any quest and dont be worried about sounding silly, they have heard it all before. best of luck.

If it is cold then the baby needs a blanket, but learning to properly swaddle a baby will prevent suffocation. You should not have loose blankets covering the baby because they can move down and the blanket can cover their noses. The nurses or midwives can show you how to swaddle properly while you are recovering from the birth. Also, a sleep positioner helps keep the baby immobile while they sleep.

I use a blanket for my daughter I just make sure its tightly tucked around her under her armpits. If it covers her arms she like to flip it up over her face.

Your baby doesn't "need " a blanket per se. Dress the baby for the environment in the house and make sure he/ she isn't directly hit by air from a vent or fan. if you choose to use a blanket, you can put it over the baby's legs and tuck it under the mattress of the crib to keep it from potentially covering baby's face. There are many many preventative measures that you can take to help avoid SIDs. Make sure you do as much research as you need to in order to feel comfortable with your knowledge. And let's just be honest here - you will be so wrapped up in holding your new gift, that he/ she won't ever need a blanket! = )

Swaddled in the beginning is fine, but when they start breaking free, and dont want swaddled then no blankets. Look up Halo Sleep Sack Swaddle. they are the best, the newborns are the ones that can come with a swaddle. but all wearable blankets are great! find on ebay, diaper.com and others

I have always used a blanket with my son. Just make sure his arms are out from under it. He is almost 6 months old now and loves his blanket and knows that when he's covered up in it that its bed time!
