Asbestos Risk? Slightly torn fire blanket that was used in the living room for some months...?
I was livid when I found out what the fire blanket was made white asbestos Chrysotile of and the associated health risks, but here's a hopefully brief resume I live with my parents and we have an open fire. One time we put a large log on that stuck out onto the carpet slightly and my dad suggested we place a fire blanket underneath just in case it fell out. The blanket had never been used before, there was talk it might be asbestos but I bowed to my parents judgement at the time that it must be safe. Over a few years can't remember how many , use of the asbestos blanket became almost routine to protect the carpet and prevent the fire getting out of control if that ever happened it so far never has, long may that continue . Over time, the blanket became discoloured, and degraded slightly. I saw it again for the first time this winter, and noticed maybe one or two small less than 5cm tears in in, and thought finally I should ask the internet about the risks, given what i should have already known. My suspicions were horribly confirmed last night and I ordered my parents to remove it from the house and dispose of it safely. After some scepticism they agreed. Now, I feel almost angry with them for taking risks and I'm just really worried that all those months of winters that is was down, packed up etc etc, it was releasing dangerous fibres into the living room air and that this has posed a serious health risk. I know there's nothing I can do about that now, but I am worried. We always ate and drank in that room too. Also worried that the microfibres might have spread to possibly everywhere in the house it wasn't uncommon to walk over the blanket and that removing them all would be impossible.A long explanation, but thanks for your patience. Please help. Thank you so much in advance for your answers.
